Biography
I qualified from the University of Galway (formerly University College Galway) in 1986. I did my basic surgical training in University College Hospital Galway (1987 – 1991) and I did my Neurosurgical training at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Hope Hospital, Salford, Manchester. My clinical qualifications are M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. (Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics), M.Ch. (Masters degree in Surgery), M.Med.Sc. (Masters degree in Medical Science), F.R.C.S.I. (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), F.R.C.S.(SN) (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons specialising in Surgical Neurology). I was a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 1998 and a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Hull Royal Infirmary, England in 1999. I was Clinical Director in Neurosurgery at Hull Royal Infirmary (2003-2008). I have a Master’s in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the University of Hull. I was awarded a Master’s Degree in Medical Law & Ethics (LL.M.) from the University of Leicester, UK, in July 2011. I was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at the National Neurosurgery Centre at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin in August 2009. I commenced practice as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Hermitage Medical Clinic in August 2015. My special interest is in complex spine disorders and management. I was appointed Clinical Director in Neurosciences at Beaumont Hospital from July 2010 until May 2016. I was appointed as a Member of the Board in Beaumont Hospital from November 2012 to October 2013. I was appointed Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in October 2012. I am the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, National Neurosurgical Centre, Beaumont Hospital since January 2018.
Scope of practice
My main sub-speciality interest is complex spinal surgery. I have also an interest in brain tumours and trauma.

I have had numerous papers published in the surgical literature and I have presented to numerous national and international meetings.
